Nina Paley came up with a great phrase about the music and movie industries the other day: "It's like Night of the Living Dead Business Model", she said.

Now comes her reaction to today's New York Times article Digital Pirates Winning Battle With Major Hollywood Studios:

Knowing Nina, I'm sure she's fine with it being reproduced here — and anywhere else on the Internet. Go for it, folks :-).

I've written a letter to the Times in response to the article, pointing out how there's no need to adopt the industry's terminology (e.g., "stealing") when discussing the issue, and mentioning how copyright primarily subsidizes (non-Internet) distribution rather than creation.

"The Revolution Will Be Animated" (documentary by Marine Lormant Sebag)

A documentary film focusing on animator Nina Paley and her decision to release her feature film Sita Sings the Blues under a Creative Commons Share Alike license.

"History of Copyright and Information Ownership" (Talk by Karl Fogel, at the Stanford University Library, 19 Oct 2006)

The talk lasts about 90 minutes, including the question-and-answer period. The audience members' backgrounds were in library science, computer science, publishing, and law, so the Q&A is as useful as the talk.
