BookLiberator Notification -- Sign Up Here!
UPDATE - 9 March 2011
Please see the Ion BookSaver, which uses basically the same design as the BookLiberator but will be available at a cheaper price and sooner. You can read more about it in Ion's press release.
We have no affiliation with Ion and receive no compensation for mentioning their product -- we just want affordable book digitizers to be in the hands of as many book owners as possible, and Ion's product now looks like the best way to achieve that. We have suspended work on production of the BookLiberator, while we wait to see how Ion's BookSaver is received in the market.
If you think you might want to order a BookLiberator when they're available, please sign up below to be notified.
We're planning to sell them from our online store as soon as the first manufacturing run is ready. The price will be approximately $120 US without cameras, or (again approximately) around $320 with cameras. The software will be 100% free and open source, and you will be able to update the software without any new hardware purchases.
There is no committment — just sign up below. When the BookLiberators are ready, we will notify you, and then you decide.
Why would you want a BookLiberator? Imagine having searchability for your library. Imagine being able to back up your books. Imagine being able to use all the digital manipulation techniques you've come to expect with digital text... on your books. And imagine being able to share your public domain and freely-licensed books with anyone.
The BookLiberator's handsome cube-and-cradle design makes it suitable to keep permanently set up in your home, near your books. We also welcome interest from schools, libraries, and other institutions that might have out-of-print, public domain books, and willing volunteers to help liberate their text from the printed page.
Note Ion Booksaver.

I find this liberator idea very exciting. Indeed many books may become freely available online for people to read legally under the doctrine of fair use. Nevertheless, I find the price a bit too high. I think this frame can be easily made at the cost of US$50 if the design is not patented, lol~~~

Hrm, this was first announced in July... is there an updated ETA?
